5. Collecting and Lifting Fingerprints

The most commonly used method of collecting fingerprints is dusting. A powder of a different color (white, black, aluminum, fluorescent, magnetic) is applied to the surface with a brush. The powder sticks to the print due to the oils and grease on the finger. The best way to preserve the print is by taking a photograph. Another way to preserve a print is by lifting it with a tape or sheets. They are mostly made of a thin rubbery or synthetic material coated with adhesive and protected by a celluloid cover. To apply a lifter, the proper size must be cut. Then the lifter most be slowly put over the print (no bubbling) so that the print is not damaged. Then quickly lift up the adhesive.

New Method:
This new method is used on metals such as bullets and bombshells. The prints can still be identified even if they have been wiped or washed off. The way it is done is by applying an electrical charge to the metal which has been coated in a fine conducting powder. Even if fingerprints is washed off, there is still evidence of it there and once the powder attracts with the charge then it is visible.
